Legarda Honors 127th Malolos Congress, Calls on Filipinos to Defend Freedom and Progress

Senator Loren Legarda on Sunday commemorated the 127th Anniversary of the Malolos Congress, underscoring its pivotal role in shaping Philippine unity, democracy, and self-governance.

Legarda emphasized that the Malolos Congress, which gave birth to Asia’s first democracy, proved that Filipinos were capable of nation-building and visionary leadership. She also recalled the contribution of her great-grandfather, Ariston Gella—Antique’s delegate to the Congress—linking her family’s legacy to her own commitment to public service and constitutional reform.

“Independence is not just the freedom to act, but the freedom to act for others. The true strength of the Filipino lies in standing firm, not just for oneself, but for the nation,” Legarda said. “We will not achieve true independence if we do not know ourselves as a nation. With every step that deepens our understanding of our culture and history, we strengthen our freedom.”

She noted that the Malolos Congress laid the foundation for the First Philippine Republic, serving as a blueprint for national unity, liberty, and responsible leadership.

As the nation’s first legislature, the Congress also produced the country’s first Constitution, which enshrined civil rights, democratic practices, and representative government. It ratified Philippine independence and guaranteed rights to education, voting, religion, and free expression.

Legarda urged the public, particularly the youth, to draw inspiration from history and honor both the heroes who fought for freedom and those who continue to safeguard it today.

“Our beloved Philippines has come a long way since the founding of the Malolos Congress and the fulfillment of our long-sought freedom,” she said. “But our ongoing fight for a just and progressive nation continues. Together, let us pursue it with hope, unity, and courageous resolve.”
