Globe Telecom Inc. is preparing to deploy 50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network (50GPON) technology to deliver faster, more reliable broadband services for both residential and business customers.
The company recently conducted a successful pilot test at its Valero Telepark facility in Makati City, where the next-generation technology demonstrated data transmission speeds of up to 50 Gbps. This sets a new benchmark for broadband performance, surpassing the current 10GPON technology, and laying the groundwork for Globe’s vision of multi-gigabit internet speeds.
“Globe is committed to providing Filipinos with the best possible internet experience, and this breakthrough in 50GPON technology is a key component of our future-forward approach to broadband connectivity,” said James Lim, Globe Vice President for Broadband Service Planning and Engineering. “With this milestone, we’re taking a giant step towards ensuring our network is ready to support the evolving needs of our customers, both now and in the years to come.”
Globe is now identifying potential areas and early adopters in preparation for future deployment.
Transformative potential
The pilot test included evaluations of throughput, latency, and jitter, as well as demonstrations of high-bandwidth applications such as 8K video streaming, cloud gaming, AR/VR experiences, fiber-to-the-room solutions, and HD video conferencing.
With its ability to provide greater efficiency and reduced latency, 50GPON is expected to transform digital experiences—enabling innovations in smart cities, telemedicine, advanced manufacturing, e-learning, and secure enterprise connectivity.
Globe said the rollout reinforces its commitment to bridge the digital divide and drive a more connected and digitally empowered Philippines.
