Apple Launches Final Cut Camera 2.0 With ProRes RAW, Genlock, and Expanded Creative Controls on iPhone 17 Pro

Must read

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — September 2025 — Apple today announced Final Cut Camera 2.0, a major update to its professional video recording app that unlocks groundbreaking features for iPhone filmmakers, creators, and journalists. Available for free on the App Store, Final Cut Camera now delivers ProRes RAW recording and genlock support on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, making them the first smartphones capable of capturing ProRes RAW. The update also introduces powerful Center Stage front camera controls on the new iPhone lineup, as well as enhanced integration with Live Multicam in Final Cut Pro for iPad.

Final Cut Camera gives users direct access to advanced video settings such as manual focus and white balance, putting professional filmmaking tools in the hands of anyone. With version 2.0, Apple pushes iPhone filmmaking even further.

ProRes RAW on iPhone 17 Pro

With ProRes RAW, creators can now record pristine RAW data directly from the iPhone camera sensor, unlocking maximum creative freedom in post-production. The format delivers the flexibility of RAW with the renowned performance of ProRes, producing faster exports and smaller file sizes compared to other RAW workflows.

Upcoming updates to Final Cut Pro 11.2 on Mac and Final Cut Pro for iPad 2.3 will give editors precise control over ProRes RAW footage, including adjustments for exposure, color temperature, tint, and demosaicing.

The update also adds open gate recording, capturing the full sensor at resolutions beyond DCI 4K. This wider field of view gives editors more flexibility for reframing, stabilization, and aspect ratio adjustments — all without compromising image quality.

Genlock Support for Perfect Sync

Final Cut Camera 2.0 introduces genlock support on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, allowing users to synchronize recordings with other devices to the same reference signal. This ensures every frame is perfectly aligned, making frame-accurate edits possible without manual syncing. Third-party developers can access the genlock API, and Blackmagic Design has already integrated it with its new Camera ProDock.

Creative Controls With the New Center Stage Front Camera

The new Center Stage front camera, available on iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, is the first square front camera sensor on iPhone. It offers a wider field of view, higher resolution, and the ability to capture in horizontal or vertical orientation without rotating the device. Final Cut Camera 2.0 adds manual adjustments for this camera, giving users complete control when framing shots.

Additional Features in Final Cut Camera 2.0

  • Apple Log 2 support, enabling an even wider color gamut in ProRes or HEVC on iPhone 17 Pro. Editors can apply the Log 2 LUT in Final Cut Pro on iPad and Mac to preserve true-to-life vibrancy.

  • Timecode options, including Time of Day, Record Run, and external timecode, for precise clip identification in post-production.

  • 200mm Telephoto recording on iPhone 17 Pro, supporting ProRes at up to 4K60 fps, expanding creative framing possibilities.

Availability

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available later this month as a free download or update from the App Store. The app requires iPhone Xs or later running iOS 18.6 or later, with certain features available only on iOS 26 or iPhone 17 Pro.
