Synology has rolled out ActiveProtect, a new line of data protection appliances designed to integrate storage and security in one platform. Released earlier this year, the solution moves away from traditional siloed backup systems, positioning itself as a streamlined tool for enterprises seeking both efficiency and resilience.
“Data protection should empower businesses, not burden them,” said Jia-Yu Liu, Synology’s Executive Vice President, underscoring the company’s goal of combining its hardware and software expertise to address evolving enterprise needs.

All-in-one enterprise protection
ActiveProtect consolidates enterprise backup software, servers, and storage into a single appliance. The system provides comprehensive workload protection, covering everything from PCs and Macs to virtual machines and Microsoft 365 services, all managed through a unified interface.
At the center of the platform is the ActiveProtect Manager (APM) console, which can oversee up to 150,000 workloads or 2,500 sites. Designed for scalability, the console uses advanced data indexing and metadata management to deliver fast querying, centralized policy enforcement, and consistent backup strategies across entire infrastructures.
Security and efficiency at scale
Security is a key focus of the platform. ActiveProtect offers immutable backups, air-gap options, and compliance-ready features to guard against ransomware and other cyber threats. Efficiency is equally emphasized: through global source-side deduplication, the system reduces network traffic by up to 99 percent and storage usage by as much as 50 percent.

Backups are accelerated using change block tracking (CBT), which transfers only altered data blocks, ensuring faster operations with minimal impact on performance.
By converging storage and protection into a single solution, Synology says ActiveProtect helps enterprises simplify data management while strengthening resilience in an era of rising cybersecurity risks.
