Palace vows ‘credible, trustworthy’ successor to NBI chief Santiago

Malacañang on Wednesday said a credible and trustworthy successor will be appointed to head the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) following the resignation of Director Jaime Santiago.

In a Palace briefing, Presidential Communications Undersecretary and Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed that Santiago’s resignation is now “for acceptance” by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Santiago stepped down irrevocably, claiming there was an “orchestrated move to blacken his reputation.”

Asked if his resignation would affect ongoing NBI cases, including the high-profile investigation into missing cockfighting enthusiasts, Castro stressed that the bureau’s operations will continue without disruption.

“Marami naman pong mga tao na may kredibilidad at maaasahan at mapagkakatiwalaan. Sila pa rin po ay patuloy na nagtatrabaho para dito,” she said.

Castro added that no shortlist of candidates has been submitted for Santiago’s replacement, and she has no information on whether the former director had a final meeting with the President.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla earlier clarified that he has not designated any acting NBI chief.
